Long-Term Care Paraprofessional Workforce

Objectives: The key objectives of this study were: to compile data from existing data systems that describe the long-term care paraprofessional workforce, document the strengths and weaknesses of existing data sources, and identifying strategies that might be implemented to improve the relevance, accuracy, and timeliness of the data.

Components: This study had several components, including:
Preparing a comprehensive list of sources of data about long-term care paraprofessional workers in the U.S.

Summarizing the data to help clarify the extent and nature of current and future shortages of these workers

Assessing the quality, strengths and weaknesses of the several data sources

Compiling information about the data included in the certified nurse aide registries maintained by each state as required by CMS

Identifying steps that could be taken to improve the quality of data about long-term care paraprofessionals in the U.S.

Reports/Presentations: The study results in one report published under the aegis of HRSA:

Nursing Aides, Home Health Aides, and Related Health Care Occupations -- National and Local Workforce Shortages and Associated Data Needs, forthcoming 2004.
