Residency Training Outcomes in New York, 1997-Present

Objectives: To assist the medical education community in New York in their efforts to train physicians consistent with the needs of the state and the nation; to provide information to current and prospective medical students and medical residents about the marketplace for new physicians by specialty; to develop a better understanding of the dynamics of the new physician marketplace by specialty and over time.

Program Dates: July 1996 - present

Components: Beginning in 1997, the Center conducted a survey of all residents completing training in New York State annually. The survey was discontinued in 2004, only to be started again in 2005 on a biannual basis. An option to complete the survey online was added in 2007. In 2007, the survey returned to an annual schedule.

The survey instrument, administered with the help and cooperation of residency program directors and graduate medical education directors of hospitals across New York State, consists of about 30 questions covering 4 general topic areas: demographic and background characteristics of the respondents; post-graduation plans; characteristics of post-graduate activities; and the experiences in and impressions of the physician job market.

Response rate for the survey varies between 60% and 70%, or around 3,000 of the approximately 4,800 to 5,200 residents completing training per year.

A report was developed annually between 1998 and 2006 summarizing the results of the survey. The annual reports resumed in 2007.
