National Public Health Workforce Study

Objectives: This study focused on publicly funded health agencies and particularly on public health physicians, dentists and nurses as well as workers with formal public health training. They study also assessed the role that schools of public health play in assisting these public health agencies to recruit, retain or provide continuing education to their workforce.

The fieldwork team included staff from four regional Centers for Health Workforce Studies:

  • Jean Moore, Director of the Center for Health Workforce Studies, New York (fieldwork states: New York, Georgia, New Mexico)
  • Peter House, Clinical Associate Professor, Center for Health Workforce Studies, University of Washington (fieldwork state: Montana)
  • Beth Mertz, Project Director, Center for California Health Workforce Studies (fieldwork state: California)
  • Robert Wood, Assistant Director for Research, Regional Center for Health Workforce Studies, University of Texas San Antonio (fieldwork state: Texas)


Components: The study had three components:
  • Six state case study: interviews with staff of state and local health agencies in those states;
  • Data analysis: identifying and analyzing available data on health professionals who work in public health agencies in the six states;
  • Project advisory committee: advised on the overall study methodology, the issues to be discussed and the questionsto be asked of state and local public health agencies, and the interpretation of the findings.
